I've spent 35 years in the education field and speak nationally on the need for teachers to embrace technologies like classroom websites, so it was very exciting to see the level of participation and innovation by so many teachers.

SchoolFusion, an award-winning provider of K-12 website and communication solutions, announced today the winners of their inaugural “Best of the Web” Classroom Page search. This contest gave SchoolFusion an opportunity to recognize teachers whose Classroom Pages best exemplify successful integration of online teaching tools in ways that support 21st century learning initiatives and engage students and parents.

Nominations were submitted by parents and students who voted online for their favorite Classroom Pages. Each nomination was carefully reviewed by a panel of industry experts assembled by Kuglin Consulting, a Colorado educational technology consulting firm led by John Kuglin, Senior Education Consultant. Of the nearly 15,000 nominations submitted, nine Classroom Pages were chosen as winners.

In response to the large amount of nominations received, Mr. Kuglin stated, “I’ve spent 35 years in the education field and speak nationally on the need for teachers to embrace technologies like classroom websites, so it was very exciting to see the level of participation and innovation by so many teachers.”

Within the Best of the Web Awards there are three different award categories: Top 21st Century Community, Most Creative Integration with Other Teaching Tools and Most Innovative Use of Web 2.0.

The Top 21st Century Community award identifies teachers who use their Classroom Page as a true, centralized communication hub that engages and informs students and parents with organized, relevant content. The winners in this category fully integrated the entire suite of SchoolFusion Classroom tools including: Multimedia Blogs, Discussion Topics, Class Announcements, Class Homework, Class Calendar, Class Links and Class Files.

The award for Most Creative Integration with Other Teaching Tools recognizes teachers who enhance the value of their Classroom Pages by successfully integrating any external media device in conjunction with their page. This year’s winners incorporated digital cameras, Skype and SmartBoard technologies.

In the Most Innovative Use of Web 2.0 category, winners were chosen based on their commitment to using Web 2.0 tools (podcasts, blogs, slideshows and vodcasts) in ways that extend learning beyond the classroom and emphasize collaborative digital citizenship. This year’s winners produced engaging multimedia projects resulting in increased student commenting and achievement.

SchoolFusion President, Stephen Shapiro, commented on the inaugural event stating, "We were thrilled by the volume of exceptional nominations that we received for this contest. Witnessing the ingenuity of our teachers really validates how important it is for us to continue building tools that empower teachers to capture the attention of the 21st century student.”
