Activ4 constantly strives to enrich the sports tours programs it operates for UK schools and clubs to participate in, and new for 2011 is Cyprus.
As a destination it has it all - one of the sunniest climates in the Mediterranean, a wealth of archaeological wonders, pine clad mountains, green fertile valleys and beautiful sandy beaches.
For schools and clubs it is also a fantastic destination for sports tours. All the popular sports played in the UK are also actively played in Cyprus, such as football, hockey, cricket, rugby, netball, volleyball and basketball, plus the added benefit with Cyprus is that English is widely spoke.
As might be expected soccer is the most popular sport played by boys and girls in all Cypriot, British and International schools. But surprisingly the second most popular sport is basketball, which is widely played both within the schools and the community. Standards are high with matches played on one of the many outside tarmac courts or in one of the main sports halls found throughout the island.
Overall there are plenty of good sports facilities on the island, with numerous soccer pitches for football tours. The principal locations are Limassol, Paphos, Ayia Napa and the British army bases, particularly Episkopi base, which is very close to accommodation centred in Limassol.
Cricket and netball are mainly played at the British bases, as is hockey, where sand astro-turf hockey pitches are available or in Nicosia town.
As a nation who is generally keen on sports, standards are reasonably good, and the local sports community is keen to welcome British teams.
Activ4 Managing Director Steve Scott commented, “We’re delighted to offer Cyprus as a new destination for sporting groups to consider visiting. With a warm climate throughout the year, Cyprus is a destination open year round, which certainly gives it an edge over many other Mediterranean resorts which close during the winter months. In addition, Cyprus offers good quality affordable accommodation, so organising school trips to this island does not necessarily mean it is more expensive than travelling to say Portugal or Spain for example”.
