As an early adopter of the “Tin Can API,” eLogic Learning (“eLogic”) is incorporating into its learning management system, eSSential, the latest version of the SCORM engine developed by Rustici Software, which includes support for the Tin Can API. Known as the “Tin Can API” because of its simple yet powerful communication abilities, the latest version of the Tin Can API will revolutionize the e-Learning industry. eLogic has partnered with Rustici Software since early in 2006 and the SCORM     engine has powered the SCORM-compliant and ADL-certified core of eLogic’s eSSential Learning Management System.

Rustici’s Tin Can API not only solves many of the problems of the older SCORM specifications but adds new capabilities, new business cases, and new ways of handling content. It fuses a decade of collective e-Learning experiences with a decade of technological advances.

The Tin Can API is a next-generation specification that simplifies the process of managing and training employees through an LMS. This opens up many possibilities for content outside of the LMS and how that content can be presented. Content creators no longer have to upload the courses into the LMS and update the content when changed.

It opens up unparalleled opportunities for e-Learning to take place outside of the LMS and, through the use of mobile devices, simulations, games and more, brings that e-Learning into the LMS for management and certification. For example, in a class on botany students may be instructed to find specific plants in a local park, take pictures of the plants with their mobile phones, and then send the results back to the LMS. This takes e-Learning to the next level and integrates mobile devices, not only as a platform for training, but as a means to facilitate education. Rather than a dry presentation on botany, students get real life examples of the plants they are studying.

The Tin Can API allows for everything to be stored in the LMS. This provides more functionality and flexibility. It is up to the administrator of the LMS as to who has access and at what level. The Tin Can API provides for user-defined variables that can either be brought in externally or resides within the LMS. An example of a user-defined variable would be a student assessment that stores which areas a student needs help in, and then delivers a review course based on those areas for that student.

Learning content can be initiated outside of the LMS. A manager can send an employee an email to get training in a particular area. The employee could take an outside class, read a book, attend a lecture or do a tutorial and then have the results reported back to the LMS once it’s completed. Alternatively, the employee can take a class within the LMS. The Tin Can API allows for long-running content outside of the LMS and provides a way to update the LMS with the information even when a network connection is sporadic. The Tin Can API allows a user to start an activity on one platform, such as a PC, and continue it on another, such as a Kindle. Because of its flexibility, it also facilitates collaborative or team-based learning.

Since content can live outside the LMS, it can be shown as it was designed to be shown without interference or clashing with the design of the LMS.
