Newly-crowned Open Champion Ernie Els is set to play in this year’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews which will take place from 4th through 7th October.
Els will be bidding for a unique links golf double at St Andrews as he tries to win both The Open and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in the same calendar year.
The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which celebrates links golf at its finest, is played over three of the world’s best known and respected links courses – the Old Course at St Andrews, the Championship Course at Carnoustie and the highly regarded Kingsbarns Golf Links
The championship incorporates two separate competitions - an individual professional tournament for the world's leading golfers and a team event in which the professionals are paired with some of the most celebrated amateur golfers.
Amateurs who played last year were film and TV stars Andy Garcia, Hugh Grant and John O’Hurley and music legends Don Felder of the Eagles, Huey Lewis and Bon Jovi drummer Tico Torres. Other film stars such as Michael Douglas and Samuel L Jackson have competed in recent years.
The Belfry, former Ryder Cup venue has been sold for a sum believed to be in the region of £90m —
The Belfry, one of the world's most famous golf courses, was put on the market with a price tag of £90m by Bank of Ireland and two other banks. It has staged the Ryder Cup on four occasions.
The complex was bought by US firm KSL Capital Partners for a sum below the asking price, it is understood.
The resort is to go through a comprehensive renovation in an attempt to re-position the resort as one of Europe’s leading golf destinations and to attempt to attract a return of the Ryder Cup to the venue in coming years.
British Airways have re-launched their services from London Heathrow to Belfast City and Dublin airports with flights operating up to seven times a day, seven days a week.
The routes provide access to some of Ireland’s best golf resorts and replace the BMI services which ended earlier this summer. British Airways’ policy of not charging for a first item of hold baggage under 23kg means golfers can take their golf clubs for free.
Tourism Ireland’s David Boyce, Head of Business and Sports Tourism said "With UK consumers looking for quality and value from their golf break, the new BA routes are sure to add further encouragement to golfers visiting Ireland to sample our world-class courses."
