Would you like to see an edible garden, flower garden or green space developed in your community? If so, there’s still time to apply for a grant from The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company.
On March 1, ScottsMiracle-Gro announced a new grant program called GRO1000 Grassroots Grants, offering $1,500 grants to local communities and organizations in the U.S. The program fits within the company’s new GRO1000 initiative to plant 1,000 gardens and green spaces across the U.S., Canada and Europe by 2018. Communities and organizations have until March 31, at midnight EST, to apply.
Those interested in pursuing 2011 GRO1000 grassroots grants can apply online at http://www.thescottsmiraclegrocompany.com/GRO1000/index.html. Projects should include the involvement of neighborhood residents and foster a sense of community spirit.
This year’s crop of ScottsMiracle-Gro’s GRO1000 community gardens is already underway. Today, nearly 200 children at Proyecto Pastoral, a community building organization whose mission is to provide training, education and social services in East Los Angeles, along with members of the Guadalupe Homeless Project, will get their hands dirty as they build an edible community garden, as well as learning and reading gardens, at Proyecto Pastoral’s Dolores Mission in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of East Los Angeles.
Throughout 2011, Scotts Miracle-Gro and its partners: Keep America Beautiful, Plant A Row for the Hungry, Garden Writers Association, the National Gardening Association and Franklin Park Conservatory will establish gardens and green spaces in Tampa; Los Angeles; Houston; Chicago; New York; Ontario, Canada; and Lyon, France.
