As part of the event, the Ministry of Home Affairs will host an inter-ministerial and inter-agency delegation from the US, Australia, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and many others. According to Andrew Marriott, Managing Director, GSA Exhibitions, "This event serves as the ideal platform for the governments to share information, expertise and increase cooperation and ultimately encourage inter-governmental agency cooperation during a time of global economic crisis. It is imperative that during a time of economic turmoil, vigilance of homeland defence and security cannot let up".
The Conference and Exhibition will be officially opened by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Mr Wong Kan Seng. In addition other leading specialists, academics and experts including Alex Robertson of City of London Police, Professor Erland Svensson from the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), Raymond Choo of the Australian Institute of Criminology, Dr Lee Fook Kay, Chief Science and Technology Officer with Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs, will be delivering definitive papers on regional and global security developments and concerns.
Rapidly Growing Industry and Concern
Homeland security has been a rapidly growing industry, with global expenditure reaching a staggering US$1.1 trillion. According to Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Wong Kan Seng, "We should work towards a well-prepared Singapore that is ready to respond to any civil emergency or natural disaster. But we should never think that we have arrived and that Singapore is ready for any emergency. This is because preparedness is not an end-state, it is always 'work in progress'."
Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has set aside a budget of SG$162 million to prepare the nation for emergencies, civil disasters and unconventional threats. Industry experts from the Homeland Security Research Corporation expect Asia-Pacific's expenditure to increase by 110% within eight years, from US$7.5 billion in 2007 to US$15.8 billion in 2015. China and India alone are expected to grow by 390% in the same time frame, reaching a record-high of US$16.3 billion. By 2015, Asia-Pacific is expected to account for 16% of the world's expenditure in Homeland Security.
Exhibitors participating at GSA 2009 include EADS, Motorola, Thales, Certis Cisco, Raytheon, Sheares and many others from the USA, the UK, France, Singapore, Korea, Australia and Israel. These industry leaders will showcase the latest technological solutions in all areas of homeland security, including Security Screening, Biometrics, Land, Air and Sea Security, Internet and Computer Security, Intelligence and Training Methods, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Threats, Surveillance and Security Risk Management.
Concluding, Andrew Marriott, Managing Director of GSA Exhibitions Pte Ltd said "The industry is set to grow exponentially as nations explore ways and means to counter potential threats. Global Security Asia 2009 will meet these demands and needs of this rapidly growing industry, and we are extremely excited to host GSA 09 in Singapore with the full support of the Ministry of Home Affairs."
