Numero Uno Web Solutions (NumeroUnoWeb.com), a fast-growing global Internet marketing firm that caters to small- and mid-sized business-to-consumer companies, releases a statement in response to a recent Search Engine Optimization (SEO) study that examined trends in the Google algorithm and how it can help smaller businesses achieve higher ranking.
According to a gigaom.com article, Google is the world’s largest search engine, handling roughly 115 billion requests each month, capturing a 65.2% market share. When Google finds a site with well executed SEO, its algorithm concludes that the site provides quality information and should be rewarded with a high ranking. As a result, small- or medium-sized businesses need to employ SEO strategies that make a site more readily discoverable by Google, and the site needs to contain content that users want to share. As Numero Uno notes, the findings of a 2013 SEO study, conducted to find trends in the Google algorithm, were recently released. The aim of the study was to analyze the characteristics of web pages at the top of the Google search engine results pages (SERPs). "The intricacies of Google’s search engine algorithm are a mystery to everyone except a handful of people at Google. As a result, small- and medium-sized businesses struggle with SEO and want to know what they need to do to rank higher on Google,” says Marco Reuter, Business Development Manager at Numero Uno Web Solutions.
According to the results, the 2013 SEO study found that the number of backlinks increased five-fold as the position in Google SERPs increased. The body copy of high-ranking pages was an average of 900 words. The higher ranking web pages used keyphrases sparingly in the body copy. The study also found that backlinks continue to play a significant role in ranking. The same goes for social signals; the more Tweets, Facebook likes, and Facebook shares, the higher the ranking.
“While not exhaustive, the results of this study provide smaller brands with some insight on what the Google algorithm is looking for. For brands working on a tight online marketing budget, these results can help them focus their efforts,” Reuter concludes.
