Anne Larcade, president of Sequel Hotels and Resort Properties and former GM of Deerhurst Resort in Muskoka, reinvents and repositions Sequel lifestyle hotels.

We wanted to capture the kind of spontaneity you find in an artist's studio or an artist's home ... not a gallery, not a museum, but a kind of singular, eclectic vision .... Bohemian, warm, unique, historic, and edgy with our hotels.

Anne Larcade, president of Sequel Hotels and Resort Properties and former GM of Deerhurst Resort in Muskoka, reinvents and repositions Sequel lifestyle hotels.

Evocative, eccentric and personal describe the Benmiller Inn and Spa, Elora Mill Inn and HV Muskoka Resorts. Hotel Developer Larcade pairs unique regional art pieces against nature's view of gorges, lakes and trout streams. "It's not just hotels, it's an experience we're selling," says Larcade. "We wanted to capture the kind of spontaneity you find in an artist's studio or an artist's home ... not a gallery, not a museum, but a kind of singular, eclectic vision .... Bohemian, warm, unique, historic, and edgy with our hotels."

Sequel Hotels and Resorts aims to be green by considering environmental concerns. The Elora Mill Inn for example has invested in a Turbine Mill where the inn harnesses 100% of their electricity to power and heat the mill. The Benmiller Inn located in Goderich uses solar energy to heat and cool guest rooms and the pool. They promote green meetings to corporate group guests. Another of Sequels resorts -- HV Muskoka uses organic products from local suppliers and creatively uses these products around regional creations.

Larcade's hospitality Management Company has acquired properties rich in history. The HV Muskoka Resort is set amidst a backdrop of Blue Peninsula Lake wedged across from a glacier drummland known as Hidden Valley Ski Hill. The Elora Mill Inn is 175 years old, and perched atop the famous Elora Gorge Waterfall. Visitors to the Inn can watch fly-fishing, gorge kayaking and ballooning from quaint guestrooms overlooking the gorge. The Benmiller Inn and Spa was built amongst the historic milling town, and is located on the Maitland River -- famous for fly fishing the world over. Guests to the Inn can view trout and salmon running upstream on their annual journey to spawn, all from the window of the Aveda Concept Spa.

The locations of Sequel Hotels are wonderful addresses and one could write a history book on each property. In fact the original founders of Benmiller, The Ivey Family of the Ivey School of business did just that and each guest room displays the book, which is a wonderful read. Elora Mill Inn has a rich history and walking tours outlining the journey of the mill take place in summer months or on request. HV was the hip place to be in Muskoka in the 70's and 80's before others hosting concerts by the music greats of the decade. The places had been run-down for years but once Anne started decorating them the rooms took on a personalized, eclectic warm atmosphere.

Ditto innovation for the way in which the hotels are sold. For corporate meetings and weddings the hotels are sold many times as an exclusive retreat. You purchase the entire property regardless of the number of rooms or guests. A General Manager came up with the idea of renting out the property on an exclusive basis and it has taken off. Again, it is the concept of personalized space and service.

Priority at any of Sequels properties is service, not obsequious but very, very attentive. The average room rate is in the $150-per-night vicinity, an extremely competitive rate. Service is not out of a can, but rather personalized and aggressively friendly but compelled to consider the individual guest.

Larcade is now working with seasoned developers GenX and Moncur Designs on another project, Lake Muskoka Touchstone, a 5 Star luxury fractional resort in Muskoka. In the meantime she remains President and COO of Sequel Hotels and is searching for acquisitions or third party hotel management contracts to help other owners design and or manage their hotel properties.
