Settlers of Catan – the “Perfect German Strategy Board Game” Gains Exposure in the United States

The people behind Settlers of Catan, a popular German Strategy Board Game, have expanded their marketing efforts in the United States, and continue to gain new, enthusiastic followers. They also introduced a new blog this summer called Catanism, which adds personality and gives insight into the people behind the game.

Settlers of Catan is a board game where players form groups of settlers who then expand their settlements via strategic trading and building based on rolls of the dice. The game was originally published in Germany as Die Siedler von Catan in 1995, when it won the prestigious title of German Board Game of the Year. Since then, over 15 million copies have been sold, with many Catan expansion games available in over 30 languages, including versions of Catan online games.

Although Settlers of Catan is currently ranked as the third best selling board game of the last decade, many Americans have never heard of it. Inventor Klaus Teuber and his sons, Guido Teuber and Benjamin Teuber, hope to change that. This past fall, Catan hired a US-based search marketing agency to conduct a massive search marketing campaign geared towards gaining exposure with the major US search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, etc.). Since their campaign started, Catan has seen tremendous growth as far as new visitors to their flagship website, Catan.com, and most notably, website traffic coming from Google. The company’s efforts to bring the Catan games stateside have had very positive results, and the rate at which the Catan board games, Catan dice games, Catan card games and Catan online games gain exposure in the United States continues to grow monthly. Most recently, reporting from May of ’09 to June of ’09 revealed that the percentage of new visits to Catan.com from search engine traffic increased by 47.96%, with the percentage of new visits overall increasing by 152.9% during the same period. Also during this period, the percentage of time that visitors to Catan.com spent on the site increased by 81%. It shouldn’t be long before Settlers of Catan is a household name in the United States, as it is in its native Germany.

Also, on June 16th of this year, Teuber and Sons launched the company’s first official blog, called Catanism. By launching Catanism and entering the blogosphere, Klaus and crew hope to connect with the thousands of fans of Settlers of Catan on a more personal level, as the Teuber family are equally enthusiastic about what is and has always been, first and foremost, a passion project for them.
