A vibrator and dildo definitely seem like unlikely super heroes in an eco-conscious crusade to save the planet but according to AdultSexToys.com, two new innovative sex toys on the market are going against the industry norms and trying to do just that.
As terms like "organic" and "all natural" have started to become hot marketing commodities it almost seems safe to assume that when the sex toy industry, notorious for manufacturing cheaply made products in China using phthalates (harmful chemical plasticizers which have already been partially banned in the US for use in children's toys ), starts using terms like "eco-friendly" they might very well just be jumping on the bandwagon of a marketing ploy to paste a cleaner image on what is considered to be, at least environmentally speaking, a relatively dirty industry. Despite a push to ban phthalate use in sex toy manufacturing currently spear headed by Greenpeace in the EU, in which participation by certain manufacturers in the industry is very valid, what else is really being done?
"We're part of an industry that we know needs to change" according to Nicole Irvin, AdultSexToys.com's products manager. "That is why we are proud to be carrying two new items that are this cutting edge. And we believe the concepts behind them can really be part of a larger solution." Those concepts include the first solar powered vibrator on the market and the world's first wooden vibrator which also has a motor that can be easily replaced versus throwing the whole toy away.
Sex toy sales reach an approximate 15 billion dollars per year globally according to Irvin. "When you stop to imagine the landfills worth of batteries that it could take to power 15 billion dollars worth of sex toys and the resulting toxic waste, a solar sex toy all of a sudden starts to really stand out as an innovative direction for the industry." The first of its kind, the solar powered vibrator carried by AdultSexToys.com is designed as a strap on vibrator and is also phthalate-free. According to Irvin, consumers don't have to sacrifice anything regarding design or power either just because it's solar. It is designed to be worn by a woman during intercourse or for solo stimulation and can perform for 2 and a half hours once fully charged.
The second innovative toy recently added to AdultSexToy.com's arsenal of 8,000 items is the world's first wooden vibrator. "Personally we were a little concerned about what the receptivity on this one might be. After all, when you hear the term 'wooden sex toy' the next two words that come to mind might be 'ouch' and 'splinter.' However, this line of vibrators, marketed under the brand name Treeze, are saturated with a urethane resin then cured under pressure and at high temperature to create an extremely smooth surface so you can rest assured that there will be no splintering." The Treeze brand is also an industry pioneer in that it offers an easily replaceable motor in its toys. Of course 15 billion in sex toy sales means 15 billion dollars worth of sex toys being eventually thrown away, especially the cheaper toys known to have relatively short life spans when it comes to durability. This concept could help reform the industry, making it a whole lot greener.
Of course AdultSexToys.com is aware that two eco-friendly sex toys out of over 8,000 will hardly change the industry overnight. "It would be great to see the innovative minds behind these two items get together and produce some sort of hybrid: a solar powered sex toy with a replaceable motor. It would be better still if that product had sales so high other manufacturers felt compelled to follow suit. In the meantime we are busy building out an eco-friendly toy section to showcase all the companies manufacturing only phthalate-free toys as part of our upcoming redesign and are just glad to be carrying two of the most cutting edge vibrators on the market." concluded Irvin.
