If you are looking for an additional reason why weight loss would be beneficial, research suggests that both obese men and women have drastic improvements in sexual function which ultimately improves their quality of life

Although little blue pills might do the trick for men experiencing erectile dysfunction, it’s a quick fix when weight loss may be the best answer. Although sexual dysfunction is not as dire of a diagnosis as other obesity-related health complications, such as heart disease or type 2 diabetes, a better sex life improves overall quality of life. Through substantial weight loss, sexual dysfunction may be completely reversed, said Los Angeles LAP-BAND Surgeon Dr. Shahram Salimitari of LAP-BAND VIP.
“Sexual dysfunction is one of the numerous, potentially reversible conditions which is positively impacted through weight loss,” said Dr. Salimitari. “Obese men are at risk for erectile dysfunction for a number of reasons, usually stemming from the other health complications they have affecting their sexual ability, such as lower testosterone levels or plaque in the arteries preventing an erection.”
A 2011 Australian study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that a five to 10 percent weight loss over a two-month period improved erectile dysfunction and increased libido for obese men with diabetes. Obese men may also have problems with orgasm, problem assessment, and sexual satisfaction, according to the Brief Male Sexual Function Inventory.
“Often, men who lose weight stop relying on artificial means to get erections,” said Dr. Salimitari. “Simply getting in better physical shape also improves a man’s self-esteem and can help a man overcome performance anxiety.”
Not only obese men are affected by sexual dysfunction, but obese women have been found to suffer from a variety of sexual problems, as well. A 2010 study from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery revealed that up to two-thirds of severely obese women had sexual dysfunction. This was reflected in their scores of the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) measuring desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain. Six months after surgery, the average weight loss for the female participants was more than 42 percent of their excess weight, and more than two-thirds of the women had totally resolved their sexual dysfunction.
Candidates for weight loss surgery are approximately 100 pounds or more overweight who have tried other weight loss methods without long-term success. The LAP-BAND surgery is a minimally-invasive procedure which works by implanting an inflatable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach which constricts food intake. It differs from gastric bypass surgery because there is no stapling of the stomach or rerouting of the intestines, and nutrient absorption is unaffected. During the LAP-BAND procedure, a small port is placed under the skin which has access to the band. In follow-up appointments, a physician injects fluid into the port to tighten the band, further constricting food intake, or takes out fluid, loosening the band.
“If you are looking for an additional reason why weight loss would be beneficial, research suggests that both obese men and women have drastic improvements in sexual function which ultimately improves their quality of life,” said Dr. Salimitari.
Dr. Shahram Salimitari obtained a medical degree from the Chicago Medical School and undertook his General Surgery residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago. He continued his training with a fellowship in minimally-invasive surgery at the University of South Florida. He specializes in weight loss surgery with a focus in gastric banding procedures.
