This project allowed us to showcase all the advantages of utilizing a precast concrete building. In creating a low maintenance and indestructible structure, we effectively produced a long-term solution for the town of Eastham.

Shea Concrete, one of the largest precast concrete manufacturers in New England, has successfully completed the task of rebuilding a beach restroom facility that was destroyed by arson in Eastham, MA. The goal from the outset of the project was to devise a strategy that would exceed all design, functionality, and long term maintenance requirements and expectations. The best solution to achieve these goals was found in erecting a precast concrete building. To fully service the community, Shea Concrete also constructed precast concrete privacy walls and walkways in front of the structure, as well as the outside shower area.
“The recreation department loves the new building, the Accessibility Committee is pleased that it is 100% handicap accessible, and our facilities department is pleased with the low maintenance design,” said Neil Andres, the Superintendent of Public Works of Eastham. “Shea Concrete spent the extra time to add vandal resistance and energy/water conservation features. Delivery was fast and easy; we were able to open in time for the busy beach season. Shea Concrete was easy to work with and customized the building to our needs. The modular process was easier and less expensive than dealing with architects and custom design.”
Through the construction of the precast building, the firm was also able to achieve the following key accomplishments:
- ADA compliant restrooms and storage closet
- All fixtures are stainless steel and tamper resistant, which aids in cleaning and maintenance
- 100% handicap accessible
- Indestructible structure that can be customized in appearance based on surrounding area and buildings
“The restroom was constructed and furnished completely before delivery. In addition, we provided precast slabs for the walkway in front and the outside shower area,” indicated Gregory Stratis, Plant Manager of Shea Concrete. “This project allowed us to showcase all the advantages of utilizing a precast concrete building. In creating a low maintenance and indestructible structure, we effectively produced a long-term solution for the town of Eastham.”
Residents are now inquiring about the possibility of adding similar units at other locations and there is increasing support for a capital project moving forward.
A Shea Concrete precast building will be on display at the 12th Annual Open House of the Northeast Precast Concrete Association (NEPCA). This event will take place on June 24th at Shea Concrete’s Rochester, MA location.
