New Web-based Twitter Application Allows Shoppers to Find Coupon Codes in Real-Time

A new social couponing website, CouponFollow.com, launched its beta version to the public today. CouponFollow is geared towards social bargain hunters and fully integrates with the popular social media platform Twitter, using Twitter's open API.

The site works by locating posts, or "tweets", in which Twitter users have mentioned discount coupon codes. The site then relays back the coupon codes in real-time to consumers, tracking their popularity and trends. "Hundreds of coupons are passed around on Twitter every day. The popular ones are often re-tweeted several times. Unfortunately they are quickly buried in the millions of other daily tweets. By analyzing the actual promotional code, along with the merchant website that offers it, we can gather some very useful data for the benefit of savvy consumers" said creator Marc Mezzacca.

Anyone can use the website to find coupon code discounts for online retailers, event sites, and other e-commerce websites. However, to add new codes and "vote" users must have a Twitter account. "We are using Twitter as the underlying platform for almost every portion of our site" Mezzacca stated. CouponFollow.com works differently than any existing coupon code website since its voting system revolves completely around users tweeting. Users also have the option to share coupons they like through traditional e-mail, as well as other popular social networking sites such as Facebook.

Since late-September CouponFollow.com has already tracked over 8,000 promotional codes and over 27,000 related tweets posted on Twitter. "We are seeing an average of 350 new codes posted a day with about 3-4 times as many related tweets" said Mezzacca. These numbers are expected to increase very rapidly during the holiday shopping season, and early October trends are already supporting this expectation. "Economic conditions have brought forth a new type of consumer, the recession shopper. This type of shopper expects discounts before considering making a purchase" added Mezzacca.

Aside from helping consumers, the site is also a viral way for merchants to spread their discounts. "For merchants, the voting system helps in two ways. The more tweets the higher the rank on CouponFollow and the more exposure on Twitter.com" said Mezzacca.
