This Year ShopRite has teamed with DASANI Water in the first ever ShopRite Earth Day Challenge Contest. This year’s Challenge is an official Contest -- with three prizes awarded -- a first place $5,000, second place $3,000 and third place $2,000 award.

This year’s 41st anniversary of Earth Day is driving home the message to inspire individuals to commit to acts of environmental responsibility through its campaign, “A Billion Acts of Green.”

In its commitment to help customers with their own “Acts of Green” ShopRite is continuing with its own ShopRite Earth Day Challenge. Now in its 12th year, the ShopRite Earth Day Challenge encourages customers to beautify their communities by cleaning up litter from local parks and beaches and planting flowers. In 2010, 3,000 volunteers gathered in New Jersey and Connecticut to clean up more than 20 communities across the state, wearing gloves and using trash bags donated by ShopRite.

To enter in the 2011 ShopRite Earth Day Challenge Contest presented by DASANI PlantBottle™, customers must complete an entry form, along with a description of their planned clean-up, conservation, and restoration or beautification project no later than Monday, April 25, 2011. Winners will be announced on Saturday, May 14th at a local ShopRite. To access the entry form, and for a full list of contest rules, please visit http://www.shoprite.com.

This Earthy Day and beyond, ShopRite is providing customers with ways to shop smarter while being environmentally responsible. Just in time for Earth Month, DASANI Water is saying goodbye to its current packaging and saying hello to new PlantBottle packaging. All DASANI bottles of water will be available exclusively in PlantBottle packaging -- the first-ever fully recyclable plastic beverage bottle produced using up to 30 percent plant-based materials.

For many years, ShopRite has provided funding and cleanup materials to community groups who make a difference in the environment. From litter abatement, coastal cleanups and tree plantings to threatened and endangered wildlife efforts, ShopRite has been there. Additional environmentally-focused programs in place at Shoprite include a bag re-use program; in-store recycling and composting; the installation of solar panels on the roofs of select stores; and super-efficient “green” refrigeration systems and energy-saving lighting systems in many locations.
