Neighborhood icon moves to new Rockville location

The Next Generation Diner

Thanks to our multi-generational customers’ loyalty and support, we are able to continue to grow and create the Next Generation Diner incorporating all the best features we've built into Silver Diner for the last 20 years.

Silver Diner, the local MD, VA and NJ restaurants offering families high-quality, healthy meals in a classic diner atmosphere, is investing 4.5 million dollars in conjunction with Federal Realty, to build a new expanded diner and company headquarters in Federal Plaza on Rockville Pike.

Silver Diner Founders, Bob Giaimo and Ype Von Hengst designed and opened this classic diner in 1989 in Midpike Plaza with the help of architect and diner historian, Richard Gutman and builder Kullman Industries of Lebanon, New Jersey, one of the original diner manufacturers.

“Our intention is to donate the original Rockville building to a museum to help preserve not just Silver Diner’s history but that of the structure itself,” said Robert Giaimo, co-founder and CEO of Silver Diner. “The original retro style diner has served as a community icon, but after 20 years, it is not viable to reassemble this custom eight piece modular classic as an operating diner today.”

“We put our blood, sweat and tears into our original Rockville location and while it is hard to leave it behind, we’re excited about the opportunity to take it to the next level,” continued Giaimo “Thanks to our multi-generational customers’ loyalty and support, we are able to continue to grow and create the Next Generation Diner incorporating all the best features we've built into Silver Diner for the last 20 years.”

The new Silver Diner location, approximately a quarter mile down Rockville Pike, will integrate the best of the 1950’s retro décor including tabletop Seeburg Jukeboxes with modern features –free Wi-Fi and an enhanced kitchen –to create the next generation diner. With more seating and Silver Diner’s new “Fresh and Local” menu, the new location, expected to open Fall 2010, will accommodate the evolving needs of Silver Diner’ customers.

For more than 20 years, the Rockville Silver Diner has been a part of the DC metro area’s history, serving more than 10,000 customers a week around the clock, which makes it one of the busiest restaurants of its size in the country. This new location will continue to serve local families with its updated menu featuring local, farm fresh ingredients. Silver Diner now boasts a menu of ingredients sourced primarily from local farms including Kreider and Parker farms to offer eggs, milk and produce, and even coffee roasted a few hours away. In addition to the diner menu classics that customers love, the menu now includes a variety of 600 calorie entrees and gluten free options to accommodate today’s lifestyles.
