Staff at Luxury Cruise Agency Silver Compass Keep Abreast of New EU Rights for Maritime Passengers

Passengers travelling by air or rail have for some time benefited from the right to compensation and assistance when experiencing delays or cancellation as well as specific rights applying to those with reduced mobility. While everyone else has their mind on Christmas, cruise experts at the award-winning agency are getting to grips with the new legislation introduced earlier this week which now extends those rights to passengers travelling by ship.

Cruise experts at Silver Compass have completed training from the Association of Cruise Experts on the new EU Regulations which became effective this week, extending to cruise and ferry passengers the same rights as those travelling by air and rail. The changes relate to two separate areas:

  • Rights for Persons with Reduced Mobility
  • Assistance and compensation for delays and cancellation

Staff at the specialist cruise agency are incorporating the new requirements into their processes with immediate effect, in conjunction with their partner cruise lines.

The newly introduced legislation for Persons with Reduced Mobility is intended to prevent discrimination and to ensure the provision of suitable assistance to disabled persons and those with reduced mobility, whether permanent or temporary. Travel consultants at the award-winning agency take great care to ensure their clients' needs are properly communicated when placing a reservation. The new legislation formalises this and places specific responsibilities on the travel agent to provide sufficient information to the carrier to enable them to determine whether the booking can be accepted. Ferry or cruise companies won’t be able to refuse to accept a reservation from a disabled customer other than on grounds of safety and must charge the same price as they would to other passengers.
