Though traffic-related casualties are down 14% since 2009, and motorcyclist fatalities decreased 25%, it is always important to remain vigilant, and to make sure that your vehicle is in proper working order for the season.

As summer approaches, the mild Florida winters give way to sweltering summer heat. With Florida’s fair weather during the summer months, it seems as though driving tips specific to those months would be unnecessary. However, Sinclair Law,a motorcycle accident attorney and law firm in Melbourne, Fla., demonstrates that there are plenty of circumstances that drivers and motorcyclists alike should keep in mind as they travel this summer.

“Summer means that children are out of school,” says Brad Sinclair of Sinclair Law. “As such, it is important to be on the lookout for an increased number of pedestrians on the road. Everybody is more active in the summer, even when it is extremely hot out, so cyclers, skaters, and walkers all need to be watched for as the temperature goes up.”

“We really need to stay focused while driving,” says Sinclair. “When it gets especially hot, this gets much more difficult; it’s no small secret that warm weather saps your energy. At the same time, be aware of inattentive drivers who are letting the heat get to them. Also keep in mind that a lot of construction happens during the summer. Be aware of any detour signs in order to navigate construction.”

While it is important to remain vigilant, Sinclair also notes the importance of your car being properly readied for the summer months. “Early summer is a good time to do preventative maintenance on your vehicle, such as a coolant flush. Since coolant needs to work its hardest in the summer heat, it’s good to have a freshly flushed system before the season begins.”

Though traffic-related casualties are down 14% since 2009, and motorcyclist fatalities decreased 25%, it is always important to remain vigilant, and to make sure that your vehicle is in proper working order for the season.
