Blue Knights International, a non-profit fraternal organization whose membership includes active and retired police officers who are also motorcycle enthusiasts, recently gathered at Fort Walton Beach, Fla., to hold the Emerald Coast Motorcycle Challenge Rodeo and Skills Training. This event, and many like it throughout the country as well as the state of Florida, is more than just a time for motorcyclists to ride their bikes through timed courses. Rather, it’s about promoting motorcycle safety and community relations with motorcyclists.

“Motorcyclists sometimes have a bad reputation,” says Brad Sinclair of Sinclair Law, a motorcycle law firm located in Melbourne, Fla. “The Blue Knights are all either current or former law enforcement officers, and hold events like the one at Fort Walton Beach to raise awareness in the community about the truth regarding many motorcyclists: That we are no different except for that we love to ride.”

Motorcycle laws in Florida change frequently, particularly around issues involving the proper documentation of the motorcycles. Regulations concerning the proper display of license plates on motorcycles have varied wildly over the past several years, with rarely more than a couple of years between each change. “The result is a lot of motorcyclists just don’t know what is and isn’t allowed,” says Sinclair.

“We’re grateful for the efforts of Blue Knights International to remove the unfair stigma sometimes associated with motorcyclists,” says Sinclair, himself an avid motorcyclist. “I have encountered numerous cases which demonstrate to me that most motorcyclists are quite responsible on the roads, and make every effort to be safe and promote safety.”
