Local man is inspired to invent a new safety tool for garbage disposals while working with children in kitchen. He launches Disposal Guard Inc and introduces Dispose-It-Guard®, a sink stopper, strainer, safety poker, and scraper: an all-in-one tool that guards against garbage disposal mishaps.
People typically use whatever is nearby to push items into a garbage disposal, usually a spoon or fork, sometimes their fingers. And what if the utensil being used slips into the drain? Most people dread having to reach into the disposer to fetch whatever may have fallen in. While these disposers are designed to be safe to use, sticking silverware or fingers into them are not; accidents can and do happen.
Garbage disposals are designed to pulverize food scraps, including nut shells and small bones – by using blades spinning at approximately 2,000 rpm. It’s no wonder there is a concern for safety while operating a disposer. Surprisingly, until now there has not been a product available that addresses these issues.
It was precisely this concern that prompted the creation of Dispose-it-Guard®, an all-in-one tool… a sink stopper, strainer, safety poker, and scraper designed to fit snugly in any standard disposal, while allowing water to flow through. It protects hands from disposal blades and prevents unwanted objects from falling in disposal drain. Leaving Dispose-it-Guard® in place as a strainer will protect against items falling into disposal accidentally – dish rags, sponges, silverware, etc. – so it is safe to run disposer when needed. It also allows you to safely push discarded food waste into disposer, keeping fingers clean and safe. The poker is designed to never touch disposer blades, so it is safe to use while running garbage disposal.
The inventor, T.J. Dombrowski, was moved to develop this while he was teaching children to cook. T.J. states, “I was helping them peel all the veggies into the sink, which had a disposal. I turned on the faucet and the disposal, and used my fingers to push the peelings into the disposal. I looked up and the children were watching what I was doing. It frightened me! Their hands were small enough to go all the way into the disposal! I told them to never, ever do what I just did.” This incident prompted T.J. to buy a garbage disposal accessory made for this purpose; he thought there had to be some safety device on the market. T.J. goes on to say, “I went to purchase something to use…I could not find anything, anywhere. So, I made prototypes until I came up with a functional and easy to use device that put safety and convenience first! ‘Dispose-it-Guard®’ was born. “
