I will remain active in the business as the Executive Chairman, providing Board leadership, and focusing on a smooth CEO transition during the next 312 days.
San Antonio, TX (Vocus/PRWEB) March 01, 2011
Harvey Najim, Chairman and CEO of Sirius Computer Solutions, announced last week that he plans to hand over his responsibilities as CEO to Joe Mertens, currently President at Sirius, while remaining Chairman of the Board.
“Three years ago, I made Joe Mertens our President,” said Najim. “He has done an outstanding job, especially under very tough economic conditions that also affected our business.”
Mr. Najim indicated that Joe Mertens will become CEO no later than January 2, 2012.
“I will remain active in the business as the Executive Chairman, providing Board leadership, and focusing on a smooth CEO transition during the next 312 days. This will allow Joe and the management team enough time to complete the successful integration of MSI,” said Najim.
In 2010, Mr. Mertens oversaw the acquisition of MSI Systems Integrators, Inc., in addition to growing Sirius revenue approximately 11%. In 2011, Sirius plans to achieve unprecedented growth, with revenues projected to exceed $1.2 billion.
As the leader at Sirius for 30 successful years, Mr. Najim has overseen changes to the business model and the management staff in order to ensure consistent, strong growth of the organization over a period when the industry saw significant consolidation. This announcement is part of a plan Mr. Najim put in place several years ago to transition the leadership of Sirius to Joe Mertens.
“Joe has the vision, the strategy and the leadership skills to take our company to the next level,” said Najim. “In addition, he has my full support and confidence. I would never turn the reins over to someone who was not my equal and even better - and that he is.”
In December, 2006, Mr. Najim established the Harvey E. Najim Family Foundation to support children’s charitable organizations in the greater San Antonio area. Today, Mr. Najim devotes much of his time to the Foundation, which has contributed over $25 million since its inception. He has been recognized with dozens of awards for his professional and personal achievements, and considers this personal transition one from a business leader to a servant leader.
“As I continue to transition into my full-time role with my Foundation, it is in the best interest of Sirius that the role of CEO be assumed by an individual who combines new ideas and fresh energy with extensive experience and a strong Sirius background,” said Najim. “Simply put, it is time for me to pass the baton to someone with more energy and fresh legs to complete the next part of our marathon.”
Joe Mertens started his career with Sirius (then known as Star Data Systems) in 1984, and held several leadership positions with the company’s wholesale and distribution divisions, including President and CEO at Business Partner Solutions (BPS) and Savoir Technology. He returned to Sirius in May, 2002 as Executive Vice President, and was named President in April, 2008.
“I am honored and humbled by the confidence being placed in me, and I look forward to the challenge of taking Sirius to the next level,” said Mertens. “No one can fill Harvey’s shoes, but I hope to bring my own business perspective and personal style to the company. I’ve learned from the best, and will be working with Harvey very closely during 2011 to absorb everything I can from him.”
Mr. Najim has been at the helm of Sirius for more than 30 years, after 13 years with IBM. He will work closely with Joe Mertens and the Board to ensure a smooth hand-off of his CEO duties.
