Top Tips for Skiing on a Budget

Fancy your first ski holiday but not sure if you can afford it? Igluski.com, the UK's largest online ski specialist, has produced a series of tips for people keen to make their debut on the slopes without breaking the bank.

Wimbledon, UK (PRWEB) November 24, 2007 -- Snow may be more or less the same the world over but where you can go to find it varies massively and choosing the right resort is crucial to the success of your ski holiday.

Remember, it's not about how much you pay. In fact, you can pay twice the amount another beginner pays and enjoy it only half as much. So don't let price be the decisive factor.

Firstly, pick a resort that suits your ability. That means don't waste your money going somewhere where, if you're a beginner, you won't see most of the facilities you're paying for.

If you are learning to ski go somewhere comparatively small and friendly with gentle slopes and a ski school that is used to beginners. Whatever you do, don't skimp by not booking lessons. Teaching yourself is a false economy and dangerous.

Avoid seriously fashionable resorts like Verbier, St Anton, Courchevel and The Three Valleys. Instead, stay in cheaper 'satellite' villages like St Christoph, Courchevel Le Praz and La Tania. Then you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

When you go affects the price enormously so try to avoid New Year, the February half-term and Easter and try for January, early February or - if there's enough snow - just before Christmas.

The country you go to is another key cost factor and that doesn't just mean Europe. Yes, the basic price of a ski holiday to North America can be higher but the current great exchange rate could save you a lot on your extras.

Don't make the mistake of thinking a DIY short break will be cheaper than a week's package holiday. It won't. The same applies to self-catering against an all-in hotel or ski chalet. It's another false economy.

When you book is also important. There are usually discounts if you book really early and you get a wider choice while if you leave it until the last minute you can often get a real bargain but it won't necessarily be to an ideal resort.

Also, watch out for special offers. Slow selling holidays often come with the incentive of free skis and/or lift passes and, if you're really lucky, you might even find a genuine 2 for 1 deal.

Finally, don't spend a fortune on designer winters sports wear. You could, after all, be one of the unlucky few who don't take to life on the slopes. So buy your ski jacket and trousers from a high street chain or supermarket.

Want to know more? Igluski has a team of sales experts who don't just flick through a brochure and recommend a resort blindly. They are ski lovers with a wealth of skiing experience themselves - and they're at your disposal.
