Team of Caesar Systems Developers Wins First Place in Smalltalk Solutions Coding Competition
Senior software developers Leandro Caniglia and Valeria Murgia with Caesar Petroleum Systems of Houston, Texas, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, won first place in the Smalltalk Solutions Coding Competition at Smalltalk Solutions 2007, hosted by Linux World Canada and IT360 Conference and Expo (www.it360.ca) at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre April 30 through May 2.
HOUSTON, TX (PRWEB) May 14, 2007 -- Senior software developers Leandro Caniglia and Valeria Murgia with Caesar Petroleum Systems of Houston, Texas, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, won first place as a team in the final phase of the Smalltalk Solutions Coding Competition at Smalltalk Solutions 2007.
Smalltalk Solutions 2007 was hosted by Linux World Canada and IT360 Conference and Expo (www.it360.ca) at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre April 30 through May 2. The team of Leandro Caniglia and Valeria Murgia was among three finalists selected to compete at Smalltalk Solutions 2007. All coding had to be done in Smalltalk, an object-oriented computer programming language that is the basis for Caesar Systems PetroVR decision support solutions for oil and gas exploration and production companies.
In the final phase of the competition, all contestants had to solve the same problem using Smalltalk. The game produced an objective score based on how efficient the contestants' programs were, and then the top three were selected. "What made Leandro and Valeria win was that their program was much more malleable than the others so they simply adapted to the changes and in fact more or less matched the performance of the reference solution," commented Suzanne Fortman, Smalltalk Industry Council marketing chairperson.
The first phase of the Smalltalk Solutions Coding Competition, which began on April 13 and ended on April 22, was judged by means of an objective score based on the performance of each registrants' submission.

In addition to participating in the Smalltalk programmers competition, Leandro Caniglia served on the faculty of the conference and presented the paper, "S313 - Heavy Validation," which offered a summary presentation of the successful use of Smalltalk programming to reconcile software user inputs for accuracy in petroleum business simulation software.
About Leandro Caniglia
Leandro Caniglia joined Caesar Systems in 2001 and serves as director of development. For more than a decade prior to this, Caniglia worked as a Smalltalk consultant for several companies in Argentina, Brazil and Chile. He was professor at the University of Buenos Aires for more than 20 years. Caniglia has also worked as a researcher in the CONICET, the official office for scientific research in Argentina. He founded SUGAR, the Smalltalk User Group of Argentina and the MathMorphs Squeak User Group. He has a Ph.D. in Mathematics and has published extensively on Computational Algebraic Geometry.

Valeria Murgia joined Caesar Systems in 2001 and serves as a solution architect and development lead for the company. She is an expert in Smalltalk and GemStone technologies. Since 1990, she has conceived, developed and maintained mission-critical systems for government and private business in South America. Although she holds a Master of Science degree in computer science, she also has also completed graduate studies in mathematics and music composition.
