Consumers are increasingly using electronic payment in both fast food outlets and high end restaurants. With the introduction of contactless technology the use of debit and credit cards for small purchases instead of cash has risen with consumers using them in chains such as Starbucks and McDonald’s.

The use of cards for high end products has also increased especially in the food sector as Liz Garner from the National Restaurant Association explained, “92 percent of full service restaurants now take cards…restaurant owners feel like that have to take these cards in order to compete.” Statistics shows that last year 81 percent of the money spent at full service restaurants in America was charged to debit, credit or pre paid cards up by 72 percent since 2006.

SmartDebit, a leading UK payment processor specialising in Direct Debit collections, are not surprised at the increase in usage by customers at both fast food outlets and restaurants.

A representative from the Surrey-based bureau added, “An increasing number of people are paying for goods and services without cash, using credit or debit cards is fast becoming the norm across the globe for consumers. Although the statistics are based on American usage, Britain reflects similar figures as contactless and electronic payment adoption continues to rise.”

The American National Restaurant Association expects these figures to rise even more so over the upcoming years.
