The move is being introduced in line with the Government’s universal credit plan, which will see people on benefits receive one single payment each month including job seekers allowance, housing benefits and tax credits from October 2013.
Kirklees council is introducing the measure to help tenants cope with the change and help their money management. 23,000 tenants will have their rent automatically taken from their bank account each month.
Counsellor Sheard told the The Huddersfield Daily Examiner that Direct Debit was a cheaper way of collecting money and that other tenants had to pay more for those who wanted to use cash.
A spokesperson from SmartDebit shares their thoughts:
“This move by Kirklees council is a great idea. Direct Debit is a useful and effective form of money management and means tenants won’t have to worry about remembering to pay their rent each month. Setting up a Direct Debit can take the hassle out of keeping track of monthly bills and ensure bills are paid on time.”
