Earlier this year, Stroud District Council tested a scheme which meant only one charity per week may appeal to the public on the high street to set up Direct Debit donations. Before this scheme, there would be four or five different charities roaming the street. Since the new scheme was put into practice, there have been no further complaints. Stroud Council’s Licensing and Regulation Committee agreed that licensing of these fundraisers should continue to operate at one charity per week.
Leading UK Direct Debit Bureau, SmartDebit, provides a number of charity clients with the ability to offer donors the option to give on regular basis. As face-to-face fundraising enters the technological era, charities are beginning to use tablets such as iPads, when approaching the public for Direct Debit donations. Their web-based facility, SmartDebit-Online, can be integrated into a website via their Application Programming Interface (API) or through an iFrame depending on the organisations requirements at the time. This gives the fundraiser the opportunity to promote the charity through interactive media such as videos or 'apps'. Should the donor want to sign up to give via Direct Debit there and then, they can simply switch the charity website, and fill out the branded and secure form.
A spokesperson from the Bureau said “It’s good to hear the number of complaints has dropped after introducing the new scheme. Research suggests that face-to-face fundraising is one of the most effective methods to obtain donations, however, charities do run the risk of tarnishing their image should some of their volunteers cause annoyance to the local public and retailers.”
He goes on to explain the importance of having an online donation stream “As well as giving charities the potential to reach out to a much wider donation base, consumers today trust online payment facilities due to the advances in security and resilience. If our online facility is used in combination with a tablet whilst face-to-face fundraising, the risk of collecting erroneous details is greatly reduced because the account details are validated in real-time.”
