SmarTots, the company that helps parents connect with their child’s learning on iPads and iPhones, has turned one year old — and has already become the largest independent kids’ app network and most popular destination for parents looking for fun apps that help their kids learn basic skills. Since the company’s launch in early 2011, more than one million people have downloaded a SmarTots-enhanced app, resulting in 10 million app sessions that have driven more than 52,000,000 minutes (or 100 years) of kids’ educational playtime.
“We set out to build the world’s best destination for apps that both engage and educate children because we believe that touch-enabled apps have the potential to be much more than just a fun distraction for our kids,” said SmarTots CEO, Jesper Lodahl, who founded SmarTots after he saw how much his own kids loved playing with apps on the iPad. “We focus on helping third-party developers add greater educational value to their apps, and now offer more than 50 teacher-vetted, SmarTots-enabled apps for kids aged 2-7, spanning categories such as art, language, math and logic, music, and science.”
Greta Lempel, a mother of children aged two and four, uses SmarTots to find apps that have real educational value and are age-appropriate. “SmarTots is my go-to destination for finding new apps for my two kids because I know I will always find a good selection of apps that have been tried and tested by teachers. I also love getting the reports and notifications of what my kids are up to, delivered straight to my inbox. Even though I don’t always have time to sit down and play with them, I feel assured by knowing what apps they are spending their time in, and finding out where I can help them.”
SmarTots Achievements connect parents with their kids’ app usage
SmarTots pioneered the concept of looping parents into their kids’ gameplay with its SmarTots Achievements technology, which enables app developers to integrate advanced reporting features into any game so that parents and teachers can monitor a child’s progress and performance. SmarTots now offers a broad selection of teacher-approved educational games for kids, and has become a hit with parents, who can see which apps their child likes to play, gain insight into how he or she is advancing, and also understand where some guidance and coaching may be needed. “The idea here is to provide meaningful insight into their iPad universe, enabling parents to engage with their kids’ play and learning, rather than remain spectators,” added Lodahl.
Julie Webb, M.Ed in learning and technology, and a first-grade teacher in Layton, Utah, has integrated SmarTots-enabled apps into her students’ curriculum. Currently, the children share seven iPads but a recent grant will enable her to put an iPad in front of every student, providing the opportunity to expand the use of SmarTots in her classroom.
“I started using SmarTots a few weeks ago and my students love working on the iPads,” said Webb. “I love the data collection and reporting tool, which I use to guide my teaching. The information SmarTots provides helps me identify students in need of additional support. Today’s students want and need technology to learn. The demand for this great service will continue to grow exponentially as teachers come to recognize the power of such tools.”
SmarTots boosts stature and reach of its developer-partners
App developers that integrate SmarTots into their apps see an instant uplift in both downloads and user engagement, in many cases resulting in more than 500 percent uplift in sales. SmarTots recently welcomed Math Evolve, a top-rated math game, into its community of edutainment-themed apps. Adam Coccari, who developed Math Evolve, thinks SmarTots’ technology is a very effective way to reach parents and keep both kids and parents engaged.
“SmarTots is committed to my success as a developer. They helped me integrate their platform and have been actively working to promote Math Evolve, with fantastic results — we have just climbed the iTunes charts and got featured by Apple across several places in the App Store. SmarTots also helps parents get more value out of our apps. I love that parents can now see when their kids earn achievements within the game, and get insights into what they are learning.”
SmarTots is a new mobile education platform for children aged 2-7 that offers a powerful way for children and parents to connect and learn. It brings together educators, parents, and developers in an interactive, fun, and manageable learning experience that engages children and provides parents with rich insight into their child’s app learning world. SmarTots is the first solution of its kind to offer parents a virtual report card on their child’s app usage, accompanied by fun offline family activities to reinforce learning and help parents actively participate. http://www.smartots.com
