When Smith Utilities Corporation launched their website, Inthemarket.com (http://www.inthemarket.com), in August of 2010, they took the late Marshall Field's motto, "Give the lady what she wants!" and applied it in the 21st century.

According to C Gerald Smith, Chairman & CEO of Smith Utilities Corporation:

"I knew a better way of buying was needed while searching for a contractor to paint my home. What were my choices? Look in the phone book? Phone a friend? Go door to door? Search the web? Not bad choices if time and constant repeating of what I wanted were unimportant… but they were. “

“And then it hit me. I had the money and knew exactly what I wanted. Why chase the seller when I could simply state what I wanted, when I wanted it, and the price I wanted to pay... at one time… in one place… to serious sellers hungry for my business?"

"Inthemarket.com is the smart way to buy goods, services, and get information quickly and easily. And here's the best part: using Inthemarket.com is absolutely free! We're not like other websites that push what sellers want and expect buyers to run to them for the sale. That's not a smart way to buy!"

Inthemarket.com doesn't have the "bells and whistles" like most websites. In fact, by today's Web 2.0 standards, one could say it would be like comparing yesterday's black-and-white analog television to today's high-definition plasmas. That appears to have been intentional according to Mr. Smith. "We value function over form. We don't waste the user's time by having to page through useless information or techno-jargon."

"Today's internet users are smart, intuitive, time-conscious, and desensitized to the 'wow factor'. If this were not true, Craigslist®, which enjoys continued success despite its appearance, would have failed."

It seems that Inthemarket.com is doing something right. They currently rank within the top three search returns on Google, Bing, Yahoo!, AltaVista, Lycos, and many others.
