"It's a real trend," said Dave Grossman, spokesman for HotelMagician.com, an online discount hotel reservations website. "In the last couple of years we've witnessed complete bans on smoking from all of the Marriott brands in North America as well as all Westin hotels in the US, Canada, and the Caribbean." The latest chain to go smoke-free is Comfort Suites, which eliminated smoking altogether at all 433 of its domestic properties as of May 1st of this year. But they are not alone. And it's not limited to North America. HotelMagician.com lists hotels in Europe, Australia, and a surprising 17 hotels in Thailand that have gone completely smoke-free.

"We've had customers express an interest in properties that were safe for people who were allergic to smoke," said Grossman. "A big problem in hotels today is when someone who is allergic to smoke finds that their non-smoking room has been given away to somebody else and smoking rooms are the only rooms left. Grossman does caution, however, that hotels do change policies from time to time and it's always best to confirm with the hotel directly before travel if you have allergies to be sure they still maintain a 100% smoke-free environment.
