BBC MK, one of the largest independent board sports stores in the UK, has recently proven that enthusiasm for sport has not been affected by the forecasted recession. With huge ranges of snowboard clothing, accessories and of course snowboards, boots and bindings all in stock it was time to take it to the next level. The Internet.
Having recently been through a change in management, BBC MK launched their online store earlier this year and has seen an increase in their sales both in store and online. “We’ve had a relatively good year considering all the rumours of doom and gloom and we’ve been pleasantly surprised by how quickly and widely the online store has grown. We’re hoping to widen our customer base and increase turnover now that we’ve joined the 21st century!” BBC MK Director, Craig.
For BBC MK, customer retention is one of the most important aspects of the business and they feel that their product knowledge, pricing and being able to sell the right equipment to the right customer is key to their year on year increase in sales. As well as offering this knowledge in store, BBC MK offers an advice line for those online shoppers who have any questions or are looking for advice before they buy. To begin with snowboarding has a steep learning curve that takes time and patience before you can truly say you are a snowboarder and therefore want to commit to buying your first snowboard and associated equipment. When you make this decision, knowing that you are spending a large amount of money on a winter sport and buying the right product is very important, and that is where BBC MK's approach to the sport kicks in.
The flagship store in Milton Keynes is hoping to increase turnover by 13% for the coming year and have already seen an increased interest in next season’s snowboard clothing and hardware. All staff are dedicated snowboard enthusiasts who have a vast knowledge of the products they sell and offer solid advice to all customers from novice to advanced riders.
BBC MK is seen by customers as an independent retailer who is able to supply a wide range of product with focus on great customer service. “I didn’t realise how many different components need to be factored into snowboarding but listening to these guys, who know their stuff, I’ve come away with a better understanding of my equipment and how to adapt it to my riding style.”
Snowboarding has and still is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. There are approximately 5.1m snowboarders world-wide with and estimated 1 million riders in the UK alone. BBC MK is situated a short distance from the UK’s first “snow dome” which offers an indoor slope and real snow for those looking to learn how to snowboard and riders are want practise and hone their skills all year round.
