The study found that 86% of the businesses surveyed said social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, and other platforms are important to their business, versus 83% in 2012. When asked what the top benefits of using social media are, 89% said "increased exposure," while 85% said more web site traffic. The Social Media Examiner study also found that Facebook and LinkedIn are the two most important social networks. When asked to select only one social media platform to use, almost half (49%) picked Facebook, followed by LinkedIn at 16%. The social media platform set to explode is podcasting. While only five percent say they are involved with podcasting, 24% plan on increasing their podcasting activities in 2013 and 32% want to learn more about it.
Managing a number of social media channels can be time-consuming, says Wu. In fact, it is estimated that it takes around 32 hours per month to manage a single social media platform correctly. On top of that, managing a social media platform is also about customer service. Customers expect businesses to respond or engage with them almost immediately; failing to respond to a customer question or concern in a timely manner can be very damaging to a brand.
