On Friday 8th of March, Pablo Rodriguez Pina, founder and co-director of the Perth (Western Australia) based software company announced the company will be using Google Hangouts to conduct meetings with clients as well as within the company.

The company, who was currently using Skype announced the move after a decrease in the quality of Skype conferences as well as the added capabilities of Google Hangouts.

Hangouts is a free service part of Google’s social media portal Google + that allows for free video conferencing with up to 10 participants.

Pablo Rodriguez Pina described the reasons for the move: “The quality is excellent, both in terms of audio and video. It integrates with Gogle calendar allowing us to send hangout invitations directly from within Google calendar invites. At the time of the meeting the user simply needs to click on a link on the calendar invite to join the hangout. Being browser based, it is cross platform and has no paid-only restrictions. Moreover, it has a feature to overlay comic pictures over one's image which can bring some good sense of humour to the meeting. We are very pleased with the service.”

Other features of Google Hangouts are:

  • Mobile support on Android 2.3+ devices with front facing cameras.
  • Hangouts On-AIR, which gives users the ability to create instant webcasts over Google+. The broadcasts can also be recorded for later retrieval.
  • Text chat - for instant messaging.
  • Screen sharing - allows to share the entire desktop or just a selected screen.
  • Effects - Funny effects such as pirate gear overlaid over the webcam stream.
  • Google drive integration
  • Sporcle - An interactive online gaming platform
