On Friday 15th of March, Pablo Rodriguez Pina, founder and co-director of the Perth (Western Australia) based software company announced the company will be using Cauchos Hessian library for client - server communication in Java / JEE projects.
The company, which specializes in Enterprise Application Development using the Java Platform announced it will be defaulting to Caucho’s library for Desktop based Enterprise Applications.
Pablo Rodriguez Pina explained the scenarios in which the library is used: “When it comes to developing Enterprise Applications, we decided on the front end technology based on the requirements and we try to give our customers a solutions that combines the largest possible usability, maintainability, speed (as in low latency) at the lowest cost. For this reason we find that the parts of the application that are only used by staff members -whether it is at work or at home- are better developed as a desktop interface. In cases like this we deploy the applications via Java Web Start and have the application communicate with the server. Still a 3 tier Java Enterprise application but the front end right on the desktop”
The company, which defaults to GlassFish for backend Java EE, was previously using Java EE Enterprise Application Client and Remote Enterprise Java Beans for client / server communication. Pablo Rodriguez Pina explained the reasons for the change:
“When Netbeans first offered support for Enterprise Application Clients, we went with that approach. One could have all the necessary code and transport platform for binary remoting following a simple wizard and use JEE features such as JMS resources, JNDI lookups and authentication on the client tier itself, it would even do automatic load balancing in a cluster environment. The downsides of the application client were the bootup time, the size of the library (as pretty much every server jar was downloaded to the client) and issue in the IIOP transport layers by which the transport would freeze if the computer went into standby or sleep. We had an application running on Mac Air laptops and the users had to restart the application if the computer went to sleep. I had come across the Hessian library on Adam Bien’s blog and when we first tested it we were pleasantly surprised by the simplicity, the performance and the minimal size of the library which is around 400 Kb.”
