What job sector should people turn to in this rough economic time? A recent report from Next 10 and Collaborative Economics finds that the green job sector is growing at a rate three times than that of any other industry in California. The Bay Area leads the state for green job growth, expanding by 8 percent between January 2008 and 2009. For those ready to join the rapidly growing green sector, Berkeley’s Inter-City Services, Inc. (ICS), a forward-looking vocational training facility, now offers progressive green technology and green job programs, including LEED certification training and solar installation programs.
“The green job data is significant because these jobs are growing in every region across the state, outpacing other vital sectors, and generating business across the supply chain,” explained Next 10 founder F. Noel Perry.
ICS has recently introduced green technology classes to their already diverse program options. Their Photovoltaic Solar Energy Training Course teaches students about the basics of photovoltaic solar, North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) certifications, and the PV technology industry. The course also includes hands-on training such as panel installation.
ICS is also partnering with Green Science Academy, an Oakland organization that provides education in eco-friendly practices, to offer a variety of East Bay green job training courses. Classes include Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, Building Performance Institute (BPI), North American Technical Excellence (NATE), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Other courses include Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER), and training in sustainability management. Students receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of each course.
“My experiences at ICS are phenomenal!” says ICS student Katina Robinson. “All employees are polite, friendly and professional, and it is rubbing off on me! Since enrolling in the computer course, my life now has purpose and direction.”
East Bay employment training facility ICS’s timely introduction of these green job courses offers an opportunity for students to excel in the burgeoning green industry. With financial aid options, flexible schedules, and a real-world curriculum, ICS makes it easy to find a job and save the environment.
