Backpackers leave the trip with a great sense of accomplishment, having overcome the mental and physical challenges the canyon often presents. They return to their lives with a renewed sense of vitality and a connection to Mother Earth.

With the Federal Government still in operation, America’s National Parks are hot on travelers’ bucket lists, and none more than Zion National Park. After the buzz created by the movie 127 Hours, tour operators have jumped to provide creative ways to explore the spectacular rock playgrounds of southern Utah. Sol Fitness Adventures is the only company that offers a backbacking trip near Zion that is guided by a former wildlife biologist in the area.
Melanie Webb, founder of Sol Fitness Adventures, studied native fish and aquatic species in the Zion area as a biologist for the state of Utah for 3 years. It was during a research trip in 2000 that Webb knew she would share this remote canyon in the Zion outskirts with others. Wanting to attract adventurous travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path physical challenge, Webb explored various routes and vetted the trip on her personal training clients from Washington, D.C. Their reward was experiencing Utah wilderness for the first time - and coming home changed.
Webb says of the trip,
“Guests to the canyon encounter a place of wonder and solitude. They fall asleep to the gurgling sounds of the Virgin River, under the stars of the Milky Way Galaxy as they contemplate their unique place in the Universe. Backpackers leave the trip with a great sense of accomplishment, having overcome the mental and physical challenges the canyon often presents. They return to their lives with a renewed sense of vitality and a connection to Mother Earth.”
Now that Webb resides permanently in the West, 2011 marks the first season that Sol Fitness Adventures will open the trip to the general public. With only 5 dates offered and a maximum of 10 guests per excursion, the trip is designed to offer an intimate wilderness experience while minimizing impact to the river ecosystem. Trips run June through September and can be customized for private groups between 4 and 10 people.
