Performance improvement company’s study identifies opportunities to improve costs and increase plant reliability

Changing constraints in various regional power generation markets are driving more companies to use operational benchmarking, according to Solomon Associates executive Ed Platt.

The economic downturn combined with perceived and actual changes in regulatory direction around the globe have caused an evolution in the market and the way clients are operating.

Solomon Associates, the leading performance improvement company for the global energy industry, today announced that it has embarked on its Worldwide Power Generation Performance Analysis (Power Study) for operating year 2010. These studies enable power generators to identify performance gaps as a basis for improving reliability and operational cost allocations.

“The economic downturn combined with perceived and actual changes in regulatory direction around the globe have caused an evolution in the market and the way clients are operating,” said Ed Platt vice president of power. “We’re seeing that changing constraints in various regional generation markets are driving more companies to use benchmarking to evaluate performance in an evolving business.”

Clients representing more than 15 countries entrust Solomon Associates with their most sensitive operational data, which the company uses to develop proprietary, confidential comparative analyses to help study participants accurately analyze their cost components in order to balance opportunities for improvements in cost, reliability, and production.

With changes like renewables increasing in regional markets, Platt sees the need for power generators to stay current with the operational changes of their peers as essential to survival. “It will be a tough transition for some, but those who use data to identify emerging trends and opportunities to improve their operations will benefit the most and suffer the least.”

Solomon is beginning discussions with companies interested in participating in the upcoming Power Study for operating year 2010, to be conducted during 2011.
