What blend of coffee defines your taste? The beans that make up the popular beverage are the second most valuable traded commodity in the world, behind oil. The National Coffee Association published a report in 2007 that found 57 percent of American adults drink coffee daily, surpassing the number of adults who consume soft drinks daily.

Amid this exploding coffee culture in the U.S., a small group of residents from various Somerby Senior Living Communities in the Southeast traveled to O'Henry's Coffee Roasting Company in Birmingham, on the morning of Thursday, September 17. Five Somerby residents and two soon-to-be residents, designated "coffee ambassadors," used their taste buds to help create a signature coffee that complements the retirement living experience at Somerby.

Randy Adamy, co-owner of O'Henry's Coffees with his wife, Mary, prepared a variety of blends with coffee beans from such places as Costa Rica, Sumatra and East Africa, among others from around the world. The resident ambassadors visited O'Henry's coffee roasting facility and scored the coffee blends based on acidity, aroma, body and flavor on a scale from 0 to 5, with 5 being "most pronounced." Once all the blends were sampled and scored, the group came to a consensus on which brew earned the distinguished Somerby name.

The blend the residents chose was the darkest of those tasted and most complex in terms of flavor profile. Five different beans were used, and Adamy says while the blend is not what you would call "West Coast dark," it's dark for the South.

"We've been turning superior coffee beans into superior brewed coffee for more than 15 years," said Adamy. "The resident ambassadors were very perceptive and wonderful to work with and we're very excited to be part of this unique opportunity with Somerby."

The resulting coffee will be available for residents to purchase at Somerby's senior living campuses in
Alpharetta, Ga.; Mount Pleasant, S.C.; and Birmingham and Mobile, Ala.

"This was a unique opportunity for our residents to create a signature coffee exclusively for our senior living communities," said Michael Mays, president and COO of Somerby Senior Living. "We're proud to be teaming up with O'Henry's, whose expertise in selecting and roasting the best beans have aided us during our quest for the perfect Somerby blend."

The two organizations struck an exclusive licensing agreement earlier this year that will bring the O'Henry's Coffees brand to Somerby's newest senior living community at St. Vincent's One Nineteen, in Birmingham, Ala.

"Coffee is one of those special beverages that people have a relationship with," said Mays. "It really brings people together; you can't say that about too many other drinks. And just like our senior living communities keep older adults connected in social relationships, there's nothing like a great cup of coffee to bring people together for great conversation."

"We're thrilled beyond measure and can't wait for our coffee ambassadors to bring the final product back to their respective communities," continued Mays. "Having our own proprietary blend is really something to be proud of."
