“Even if Johnny Lewis is found to be the cause of Mrs. Davis’ death, prosecutors will not pursue criminal charges. However, these types of cases will at times lead to a wrongful death lawsuit" -Gary Annes

In a perplexing sequence of events, "Sons of Anarchy" actor Johnny Lewis was found dead in Los Feliz on September 26, and is currently the lone suspect in the death of his landlady, Catherine Davis. Just prior to apparently falling off a roof to his death, he also reportedly attacked two neighbors and a painter. This baffling flurry of alleged criminal activity has sent shock-waves across the U.S., and further legal action may be forthcoming.
The bizarre altercation was the culmination of mounting problems for Lewis, who was arrested three times this year, abused drugs, and had a history of mental health issues.
A History of Distress:
Warning signs were certainly present in the actor best known for his role as Kip "Half-Sack" Epps on the hit show “Sons of Anarchy”. In fact, probation officials expressed concern about Lewis' mental health earlier this year. They prepared a report on Lewis’ increasingly anti-social and dangerous behavior for a case in which Lewis was accused of attempting to break into the home of a woman. Moreover, this incident came six weeks after Lewis was charged for hitting two men over the head with a Perrier bottle during a fight.
The probation officials wrote of being "…very concerned for the well-being of not only the community but that of the defendant." The report went on to note that the actor suffered from an unknown form of chemical dependency, had apparent mental health issues, and was a transient. The report concluded that, "Given this, (Lewis) will continue to be a threat to any community he may reside."
Additionally, Lewis was reportedly bipolar and began to "self-medicate" after suffering a serious setback following an incident earlier this year. These red flags demonstrate the actor's tendency toward violence and mental instability that ultimately may have cost him his life along with the life of Mrs. Davis.
While the cause of Catherine Davis' death is not currently known, police officials cite major physical trauma as their primary suspected factor. Even though the victim and defendant are now deceased, criminal investigations will continue.
However, Gary Annes, an attorney at Abels & Annes, P.C. notes that, “Even if Johnny Lewis is found to be the cause of Mrs. Davis’ death, prosecutors will not pursue criminal charges. However, these types of cases will at times lead to a wrongful death lawsuit.”
The law provides for this so that when someone dies due to the fault of another person or entity, compensation may be pursed for the survivors' loss. This can include lost wages from the deceased, lost companionship, funeral expenses, and more. Every state in this country now has some kind of wrongful death law, though the particulars may vary.
Police are just beginning to uncover the details of this tragic end to the turbulent life of Sons of Anarchy actor Johnny Lewis, and only time will tell what the ultimate ramifications will be for all involved.
