Center for Discovery, a nationally recognized leader in eating disorder residential treatment, is proud to announce that it is hosting an event at its La Habra location. The event, entitled “Celebrating You and What is New at Center for Discovery” will include a presentation by Center for Discovery’s own Julia Cassidy, RD, on Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) and Kitchen Skills Training. The event will also include an outdoor luncheon, summer games, and networking activities. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience, hands-on, the Kitchen Skills Training that Center for Discovery provides clients. The presentation by Julia Cassidy, RD, “ERP and Kitchen Skills Training” will discuss how Center for Discovery integrates Exposure Response Prevention and Kitchen Skills Training into eating disorder treatment.

Individuals with eating disorders are noted as being amongst the most complex people to treat due to their intelligence, temperament, personality and the impact that malnutrition has on their physiology. Firmly established resistance to reasonable treatment goals is often received from clients and this resistance often hinders the therapeutic alliance. Exposure Response Prevention therapy can be an effective way to strategically help manage the sensitivity and reactive resistance of clients, as well as help sustain the fragile therapeutic alliance and facilitate progression toward treatment goals. Kitchen skills groups utilizing Exposure Response Prevention are an integral part of the eating disorder treatment program at Center for Discovery. Center for Discovery’s program utilizes Exposure Response Prevention focused around food and nutrition. Clients at Center for Discovery have the opportunity to go into the kitchen and prepare their own breakfasts, lunches, and snacks. During lunch preparation, clients have the opportunity to create a challenging lunch that has been discussed with the dietitian or collaborate with other clients to come up with and create new ideas for lunch. This food preparation experience allows clients to become acclimated to and comfortable with being around food and the kitchen.
