The Bonati Spine Institute advises all sufferers of Spinal Stenosis to evaluate their treatment options before receiving a steroid injection to combat the pain.
Spinal Stenosis causes a narrowing of the spinal canal, which in turn leads to a variety of symptoms with back and leg pain chief among them. Steroid injections tend to be recommended when patients see no improvement in their symptoms following initial treatment.
According to a research article published in the journal, Spine, on February 15, Dr. Kris E Radcliff and colleagues came to the conclusion that steroid injections do not actually lead to improved outcomes for patients. For the study, Dr. Radcliff and colleagues compared patient outcomes from 69 different cases involving steroid injections in the first three months of the Spine Outcomes Research Trial. These results were then compared against the records of 207 patients who did not receive injections.
When looking specifically at patients who had surgery, those who also received injections exhibited fewer signs of improvement in physical functioning over the years. The Bonati Spine Institute recommends to all suffers of Spinal Stenosis that they fully evaluate their treatment options with their back specialist before leaning toward a steroid injection. The effectiveness of nonsurgical treatments, the extent of the patient’s pain and the patient’s preferences all factor into whether or not to have surgery. However, surgery is generally recommended immediately if numbness or weakness interferes with walking, bladder function or other neurological involvement.
