Blackthorn Tavern to Show UFC 159 Light Heavyweight Championship

“One of my favorite bars in the city. GREAT beer selection. TVs line the walls, great for sports and UFC. Bartenders are AWESOME.”

While mixed martial arts has grown exponentially in the United States with many fighters making the Bay Area their home, very few bars in San Francisco show the pay-per-view fights. Blackthorn Tavern, in the Inner Sunset District, has shown every pay-per-view UFC bout for the past three years, at a lower cover charge than other bars in San Francisco, in response to the growing demand among customers who enjoy the sport.

Blackthorn will be one of only several bars in San Francisco to show UFC 159, the April 27 light heavyweight championship bout between Jon “Bones” Jones and Chael Sonnen. Jones, one of mixed martial arts’ most dynamic and popular fighters, aims to defend his belt in the pay-per-view fight. The action begins at 7 p.m. The cover charge will be $10.

In addition, San Francisco’s mixed martial arts community has made Blackthorn a destination, as emerging fighters often hold fundraisers at the bar and professional fighters such as the UFC’s Gilbert Melendez have visited.

Blackthorn recommends fans arrive early to claim a booth. Blackthorn recently upgraded its facility by raising three booths by one foot each, ensuring a great view while all customers are seated. They’ve also added new benches and bigger high-definition televisions. Blackthorn turns up the sound to make sure you can hear the action in addition to getting a clear view from one of the 14 high-definition televisions.

Even those not looking for somewhere to watch the fight can enjoy other things Blackthorn Tavern has to offer. Blackthorn offers 16 beers on tap and more than 30 types of whiskey. Patrons can bring in (or order delivery) a meal from the many neighborhood restaurants that offer diverse, delicious, affordable food.

The Blackthorn has emerged as one of San Francisco’s leading sports, trivia, pool and karaoke bars, serving as a primary meeting spot for the San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, mixed martial arts, soccer, basketball and more. Party Earth ranks Blackthorn as one of the best Irish bars in the world and one of the best sports bars in San Francisco. Huffington Post recently listed Blackthorn as one of the best “World Series” and “St. Patrick’s Day” bars in the city.
