The Sports Fan Playground (sportsfanplayground.com) has become a leading provider of brands such as Nike, Jordan, EA Sports and more, bringing in many shoppers and bringing in a new wave of sporting good e-commerce. Recently, however, the company has undergone several changes to its website in terms of adding in new products and categories that extend to the core interests of not only sports fans, but also extending into health products such as the p90x and a deeper, more extensive collection of sports collectible products, including signed baseballs, footballs, basketballs, shoes, helmets, photos, jerseys and more.
Since the initial launch in April 2012, the Michigan-based site has become one of the most popular sporting goods sites online, bringing in over 550,000 views since the initial launch.
The website’s main goal is to offer the top sporting goods products at the best prices around. Which is the idea of most e-commerce stores, but with one catch – the Playground – as owner DaVaughn Lucas nicely calls it, is a place where you can find a little bit of everything that would involve a ball, bat, gloves or other things.
“When I would go to a mall – no matter where it would be - many times there are massive stores that carry shoes, and athletic apparel and all, but you go down the walkway and find a tiny store that has another level of sporting goods that might cater to hockey or bowling, and then at another mall or strip mall, you find a sports collectibles store. As a sports fan, one of the things that we love about athletics is that when we watch a pregame, then the game and then the post game and such, its all a part of broadcast for the most part and we don’t have to go anywhere else for the information,” says Lucas, when asked about the initial idea behind the business.
“The theory of ‘everything in one place’ should be in place for a shopping site, especially for sports. Sports is one of the most passionate topics and activities on Earth, and fans want to be able to find a bit of everything, and at an affordable pricing.”
The Playground truly does embrace what Lucas had mentioned he wanted, a bit of everything. Over 5 million products are available in the store from leagues around the world including professional North American Leagues (NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL), international soccer leagues, high schools and more. Some of the new products and categories introduced recently include -
With having the extensive selection of items, would there be any room for full extension? “Absolutely there is,” says Lucas. “With so many leagues and sports fans worldwide that may not like all North American sports, we have a responsibility to carry products that cater to various parts of the world, but still keeping with the crazed fandom, which is a universal language.” Lucas said that while the store already carries many international products, the company will look to expand into Canada, Italy, China, Japan, England, Germany and France by the end of the year by creating specialized stores that will be geared towards the culture and popular items of that particular region. “That is what is so amazing about sports and being a sports fan. It is easy to appreciate athletics and competition from any part of the world.”
Lucas also announced that the Sports Fan Playground will be branching into electronics at the best prices available. The store will begin carrying items including TVs, video games - including the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Playstation Vita, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo Wii U, tablets including the Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Note, and the Blackberry Playbook, and cell phones - both locked and unlocked - including unlocked iPhones, Samsung Galaxy SIII, Google Nexus Phones, and the soon-to-be-released Blackberry Z10.
Will Lucas try to get another web property going that will focus on another item? “Who knows. Depends on how I feel when I wake up and if I have had my Wheaties that day.”
