In a game-changing moment for the sport of collegiate football, Eastern Washington University teamed up with industry leader Sprinturf, to install the first ever all-red synthetic turf football field.
"Sprinturf was the obvious choice due to the quality of product, peer recommendations, value and the professionalism demonstrated by Sprinturf throughout the selection process. I found Sprinturf to be a refreshingly forthright, honest and candid partner," shared Michael Westfall, Executive Director, Eastern Washington University (EWU) Foundation.
"This is such an exciting project for us!" added Stanley H. Greene, president and CEO of Sprinturf. "The entire team at Eastern Washington University and the EWU Foundation have been great!"It's not every day you are awarded the opportunity to be part of such a unique project. This field will be an icon for the University and we're very proud to lead the industry regarding the building of custom color fields."
Eastern Washington University is not the first, but amongst an elite few to embed their school colors in their football field. The most widely known is the blue field at Boise State that began 23 years ago, however, Sprinturf installed the second blue field at the collegiate level in 2007 at the University of New Haven's Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium to help commemorate the re-introduction of their football program for the 2009 season.
Eastern Washington's "See Red Campaign" 2010 Stadium Project was launched earlier this year and drew large amounts of publicity with the announcement of the decision to go with a red field. A generous contribution by Michael and Katherine Roos, both graduates of Eastern Washington University, really made the vision a reality for this season.
After four years of outstanding football for Eastern Washington University, Michael Roos was the ninth pick in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft and has been playing for the Tennessee Titans ever since, starting every game in his NFL career. Michael is the highest draft pick ever to come out of Eastern Washington University.
When the installation is complete, the field will be re-named Roos Field in appreciation of the Roos family's generous contribution.
"Our goal with this project was two-fold; first, to provide our student-athletes a superior playing surface and secondly, to bring greater visibility to the football program at Eastern Washington University. The red field and philanthropic involvement of the Roos family has certainly helped us to achieve those goals. I think it's going to be a great year," commented Eastern Washington University Athletic Director Bill Chaves. "We know the Sprinturf field is of the highest quality for our athletes and offers us an advantage. Now we've got a red field which will enhance our competitive advantage."
Installation on the new field began this week on new field and a live webcam has been setup for 24/7 viewing on the http://www.goeags.com website. To watch history in the making on the EWU 2010 Stadium Project, visit http://www.ewu.edu/groups/athletics/pages/TurfCam.html.
