Endodontic specialists and general dentists are partners. While dentists offer routine care, we provide solutions for the more complex issues that may arise.

Endodontic specialists Dr. Allen J. Rosenthal and Dr. Agnes Herceg of Advanced Endodontics and Microsurgery (AEM) want to dispel the long-running myths about root canal procedures.
Endodontics deals with the living connective tissues of teeth and endodontic therapy is commonly known as “root canal therapy.”
“With today’s advanced technology, root canal therapy is a routine procedure,” says Dr. Rosenthal. “It’s no longer a painful ordeal. Patients are finding that it’s no more painful than getting a filling.”
Thus all the jokes that compare getting a root canal to other unpleasant episodes in life are based on myth, rather than reality.
Root canal therapy, however, remains high on the list of procedures that patients would like to avoid. According to a January 2013 survey by the American Association of Endodontists, 70 percent of respondents indicated that they wanted to avoid getting a root canal and 60 percent were more anxious about root canal treatment than getting a tooth pulled (57 percent) or receiving a dental implant (54 percent).
“Many of the concerns about root canal treatment are outdated,” adds Dr. Herceg. “At AEM, we rarely have any complaints about pain or discomfort during or after the procedure.”
Drs. Rosenthal and Herceg also want to emphasize the role of general dentists in treating patients who need root canal therapy and other specialized treatment.
“Endodontic specialists and general dentists are partners,” says Dr. Rosenthal. “While dentists offer routine care, we provide solutions for the more complex issues that may arise. It’s important that dentists have a relationship with their local endodontists and feel confident in referring patients to them.
“It’s equally important that general dentists are able to make their patients feel comfortable about receiving endodontic treatment.”
