Statue of Liberty Closing Temporarily For Security Upgrades

It’s going to be a busy summer for the Statue and that ferry line is a long, hot one, but at least our Statue of Liberty tour tickets allow visitors to bypass the line.

After 125 years of representing America’s independence, the Statue of Liberty will taking up to a year off to have some interior work done, reports the Statue of Liberty tours experts at NYCTrip.com. Lady Liberty will close on November 1st, 2011 for a reported $26 million dollars in interior upgrades and repairs. Visitors can still disembark on Liberty Island and tour the exterior of the Statue while it is closed.

One narrow, spiral staircase is currently the only access to the Statue’s crown, presenting a security and safety hazard to visitors, as it is the only way to and from the Statue in the event of an emergency. Security upgrades include elevators, fire-proof staircases, and additional exits, reports David Luchsinger, superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.

“The Statue of Liberty tours continue to be one of our most popular tours, and we expect so many visitors will wish they planned their NYC trip before the Statue closes for repairs on November 1st. It’s going to be a busy summer for the Statue and that ferry line is a long, hot one, but at least our Statue of Liberty tour tickets allow visitors to bypass the line,” explains Barry Tenenbaum, of NYCTrip.com.

One specific addition will include the construction of an additional staircase leading from the ground to the Statue’s pedestal, which will reach about halfway to the top of the statue. Only ten Statue of Liberty visitors are currently permitted to make the trip up the staircase to the crown due to evacuation concerns and preventative safety measures.

“Many other NYC tourist spots have undergone safety overhauls, so after 125 years, the Statue of Liberty is long overdue for a security upgrade. With so many changes in the world today, it’s reassuring to see a national monument be maintained and preserved for generations to come,” notes Tenenbaum.

NYCTrip.com will continue to offer their Statue of Liberty tours, with interior access included, until October 31st. The tour will still be available from November 1st on, but will not include inside access while the repairs are made.
