At 4:09 AM on April 11th, 2012, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Immunization Information System (ASIIS) reached 50,000,000 vaccination records in their registry. Arizona’s Immunization Information System (ASIIS) currently includes 5,066,137 patient records and has 1,158 reporting providers and 9,977 enrolled users. This exciting milestone coincides with the 20th anniversary of The Arizona Partnership for Immunization (TAPI), whose mission is to foster a comprehensive, sustained community program for the immunization of Arizonans against vaccine preventable diseases.
Scientific Technologies Corporation (STC), the company that developed and maintains this system, is excited to reach this milestone on the journey to improving public health outcomes. Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD) still impacts our communities and poses life-threatening risks to our populations. Ensuring that the right vaccine is given to the right patient at the right time is critical to promoting disease prevention. Monitoring disease trends, evaluating the effectiveness of immunization programs and understanding the populations effected by disease are cornerstone. Immunization registries, such as the ASIIS system, give providers the clinical decision-making tools to do this.
STC designed and developed Arizona’s statewide immunization registry which began development in 1995. For over twenty years STC has been providing leadership in the implementation of population-based registries in support of the public health mission to reduce the health and economic impacts of vaccine preventable diseases on individuals, families and communities. STC has worked with leaders in state health, non-profits, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to establish standards and best practices for immunization registries to support providers and clinical care of patients. STC’s firsts in this field range from the use of Geographical Information Systems to identify populations at risk to VPD, to establishing a national electronic immunization record sharing network between all US states after Hurricane Katrina, to focusing on empowering individuals with access to their immunization records 24x7 across the globe.
STC staff members include public health professionals, epidemiologists, software design architects, public health client service managers, and quality control teams. In addition to supporting public health projects across the US, these individuals are active in key national standards work groups establishing data exchange criteria to support health transformation efforts.
