Colorado Property Managers to Receive Water-Saving Recognition

Mount Werner Water District salutes ResortQuest Steamboat Springs Vacation Rentals as first winner.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado (PRWEB) June 21, 2007 -- The Mount Werner Water District, in Steamboat Springs Colorado, announced today it has launched a program that will recognize condominium, apartment, hotel and townhouse managers for their water conservation measures.

The District unveiled a list of standards that managers of these multiple dwelling units can achieve for certification at three levels: bronze, silver and gold. The program is designed to encourage water conservation throughout the year, but particularly during the high-usage period of June through August.

We want to reward the property managers who have made this community-wide issue a high priority
"We want to reward the property managers who have made this community-wide issue a high priority," said District General Manager Jay Gallagher. "Multiple dwelling units are of particular concern in our water conservation efforts, because they represent nearly 70 percent of water consumption in the District. We seek to partner with area property managers, in hopes that they will encourage their client homeowners associations to incorporate conservation practices and policies."

Property managers who achieve certification will receive a seal of recognition from the District, and the property managers are encouraged to use the seal in any of their promotional efforts. Visitors to Steamboat Springs often choose their lodging based upon the property's attention to the environment.

The District worked with ResortQuest, which offers Steamboat Springs Vacation Rentals, to establish a set of standards that would be appropriate for the lodging industry in Steamboat Springs, and ResortQuest Steamboat subsequently pre-qualified for certification at the silver level.

"We recognize that a lodging company the size of ResortQuest Steamboat can have a considerable impact upon the environment, and we are proud to say we have been focusing on water conservation for years," said ResortQuest Steamboat General Manager Jaki Oakland.

"Mount Werner Water District brought to our attention some additional measures that we can adopt, and we are pleased to receive the District's silver seal."

There are 12 standards for certification, including the following:

  • Plumbing fixtures are examined for leaks at least annually and leaks are repaired.
  • All sprinkler heads are monitored at least weekly and aligned to minimize waste in non-landscaping areas such as sidewalks and driveways.
  • Irrigation system is timed to operate after 8 p.m. and before 6 a.m.
  • More than half of established flower and shrub beds have a "drip" irrigation system.
  • More than half of the landscaped property is xeriscaped.
  • Spas and pools have covers to reduce evaporation.
  • No outdoor fountains; no water features.

The standards also encourage homeowners' associations to adopt a policy to consider water conservation measures in any capital improvements, particularly landscaping. Properties that comply with five of the 12 standards receive a bronze seal; properties that comply with seven standards receive a silver seal; and nine standards equal a gold seal.

The program is part of an ongoing effort by the District to raise awareness about the benefits of conserving water. Last year, the District distributed information to individual homes and provided hotels with information cards that they could place in all guest rooms.
