amniotic cells appear to be at least as malleable as embryonic stem cells but without all the ethical baggage.

Long Beach, CA (PRWEB) June 18, 2007 -- In the coming months and years, it is projected that each of these Stem Cells research area's will be three of the top ways in which scientist and bio tech research companies will harvest stem cells. These new techniques will soon eliminate the need to use human eggs or embryos to make cells that are, for all intents and purposes, human embryonic stem cells.

Amniotic Stem Cells:

As stem-cell researcher Malcolm Alison of the University of London told the Daily Mail, the "amniotic cells appear to be at least as malleable as embryonic stem cells but without all the ethical baggage."

Amniotic stem cells may be the most easily differentiated of all--as well as among the easiest to extract in large amounts. Indeed, they are routinely recovered with a hypodermic needle during amniocentesis. While it's widely believed that this procedure slightly increases the chance of miscarriage, a sizable study last November of 35,000 women who underwent mid-trimester testing found no significant difference in loss rates between those undergoing amniocentesis and those not undergoing amniocentesis.

There are over four million births each year in the United States, yet Atala calculates that merely 100,000 amniotic stem cell specimens could supply 99 percent of the U.S. population's needs for perfect matches for transplants. (That assumes a perfect match is even needed.) About 700,000 amniocentesis procedures are performed in the United States and Western Europe each year.
Life News Article

Skin Stem Cells:

Last week Congress passed, for the third time, an attempt to water down the president's pro-life stance on embryonic stem-cell research. President Bush has promised a veto of the legislation. Also last week, researchers discovered that skin cells can be converted into embryonic-like cells without destroying a life. Coincidence? Similar breakthroughs were discovered around the same time as each vote by Congress.

Before the House vote on HR 3 in January, scientists published evidence that a type of adult stem cell -- amniotic fluid cells -- were just as flexible as embryonic stem cells. A treatment for diabetes using adult stem cells was heralded as a medical breakthrough the same week in April that the Senate voted on identical legislation (S. 5). And just last week, a new study showed that adult cells can be converted to embryonic-like stem cells without destroying embryos.
