Bergen County, NJ (PRWEB) November 06, 2012
Bergen County, New Jersey pain management clinic Spine and Joint Center is offering patients with chronic knee pain due to osteoarthritis a unique opportunity to participate in a groundbreaking stem cell research study. Patients invited to participate in the study will receive a new and innovative treatment for chronic joint pain.
The study is designed to assess treatment plans involving ASCs, or autologous adipose-derived stromal cells. These cells are non-embryonic, non-controversial stem cells harvested from the patient’s own adipose (fat) tissue. The cells will be extracted from an adipose tissue sample taken from the patient’s stomach, mixed with platelet rich plasma (a healing platelet-infused sample of the patient’s own blood), and administered via injection to the affected joint. The total number and frequency of injections will vary depending on each patient’s tissue, and the entire study will be carried out over approximately 6 months.
Participation in the study is available to men and women ages 18-80 with a diagnosis of osteoarthritis in the knee joint. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition which occurs when cushioning synovial fluid in the joints begins to wear away, impeding mobility and causing chronic pain. While any type of arthritis can be debilitating, osteoarthritis of the knees can interfere heavily with a person’s ability to perform daily tasks and live a normal life. Stem cell therapy has taken a top position in the field of minimally-invasive pain management therapies; the treatment initially gained fame in 2011 when New York Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colón received stem cell injections to treat an injured shoulder and made a complete recovery in a matter of several weeks.
Administering ASC treatments at the Spine and Joint center (which also serves nearby Manhattan and New York) will be Dr. Damon Noto, a leading pain specialist in New Jersey with experience in providing stem cell therapy NYC and NJ patients can enjoy as an alternative to invasive surgical procedures. The study is IRB-certified, meaning that it has gained the approval of an independent review board and will be monitored during its execution to ensure the proper treatment and ethical handling of the individuals participating in the research.
