LaMarche shares her expertise on the topic of mainstreaming children with special needs into traditional classroom settings.

Michele LaMarche, BCBA, founder and executive director of Step By Step Academy, a leading provider of integrated behavioral intervention, education, and related services designed to support the ongoing needs of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), served as a guest speaker this month for a segment on 90.3 WCPN ideastream® in Cleveland. LaMarche was chosen as an expert in her field to be part of a panel convened to discuss how to manage behaviors of children with special needs and ways to mainstream children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) into traditional classroom settings. The panel was comprised of experts within the special education field who are well-versed on the topics of autism and mainstreaming.

The goal of the program was to tackle the underlying issues of mainstreaming children with ASD and behavioral disabilities by providing a candid dialogue around how schools can successfully integrate these children into typical classroom settings. As an expert panelist, LaMarche, a board certified behavioral analyst with over fifteen years of clinical and hands-on experience working with individuals with ASD, provided insight and strategies for getting children with special needs into public schools and into traditional classrooms. As founder and Executive Director of SBSA, she has a proven track record of success in mainstreaming hundreds of kids into traditional schools and classrooms. LaMarche’s approach relies heavily on a carefully developed and tested curriculum that is grounded in science and rigorously applied to lead to the best possible outcomes for students.

By establishing a solid educational curriculum and providing intensive behavioral support using evidence-based practices like applied behavioral analysis (ABA), LaMarche and Step By Step Academy have solidified themselves as a leading educational model for mainstreaming individuals with ASD into the least-restrictive school setting. They have established partnerships with local school districts to institute fully integrated programs in public school settings that align with their successful educational model. Most recently, SBSA was called upon by the Marion City Schools superintendent to establish a program that provides behavioral support in an inclusive environment by bringing two intensive behavioral intervention classrooms to the district.
The entire WCPN program was available via live stream on August 8, 2012.
