Baltimore-based STX, a global sporting goods leader, announced today that it has signed a three-year agreement with the University of Maryland as the Official Field Hockey Equipment Sponsor of the program.
“As the market leader in field hockey equipment sales, it is important for us to push even further in developing next generation products for elite field hockey players. The University of Maryland field hockey program is the ideal partner to assist us in attaining that goal,” said Jason Goger, STX President. “Missy Meharg’s unparalleled success on the field and the amount of respect she garners in the broader field hockey community speak to the quality of not only her coaching ability, but the character of her program. We are absolutely thrilled to be working closely with her on developing world championship caliber products.”
STX is the most widely distributed field hockey brand in the U.S. and will continue its commitment to the sport by working with the University of Maryland field hockey team to develop product. As part of the agreement, players will practice and compete with product before it hits the marketplace; providing STX with valuable feedback from elite players.
This collaboration between STX and the UMD Field Hockey program was an initiative that inspired the new 2013 STX stick lines. The newly developed sticks will be unveiled at the USA Field Hockey Disney Showcase in Orlando, FL on February 7th. Player’s attending the showcase will also get a first look at the custom-designed University of Maryland stick.
“Over the past year I have witnessed STX perform extensive consumer research. Their mission to design and provide a line of competitive sticks for the high performance player is exciting.” said Missy Meharg, head coach of the University of Maryland’s field hockey team. “Our coaching staff and elite players had input throughout the design phase and worked closely with the product development team at STX. Their team has worked hard and with great precision to make adjustments for each positional stick profile. They have done a great job. We are deeply honored to have STX as our official hockey stick provider.”
This year marks the 20th anniversary of STX Field Hockey. STX recently signed American field hockey icon Carrie Lingo and partnered with USA Field Hockey for the Play It Forward program, which aims to encourage youth participation in the sport.
